Inspiring Northern Gardeners Since 1985
Our Pest/Disease Control Philosophy
Our rich, rural nursery environment is teeming with life: toads, birds, bees, beneficial insects and dozens of other critters. And we want to keep it that way.
When in comes to pest & disease control, we believe in an approach that is responsible, environmentally conscious, and minimally toxic (ideally, non-toxic). This protects all of us from unnecessary pesticide exposure: employees, customers, plants, animals, and insects alike. It also encourages a healthy balance in greenhouse grown plants and the surrounding environment.
In our greenhouses, we use preventative measures wherever possible. This includes closely inspecting and monitoring plant stock, keeping the greenhouses clean, and selecting pest/disease resistant stock. Should the preventative measures fail, we employ biological pests (such as parasitic wasps, midges, or ladybugs) or gentler insecticides to manage pest problems. This approach is known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
