Spinach
An easy to grow leafy green that grows best in the early part of the season (or during cooler summers). Grows very quickly. Harvest at baby leaf stage or before leaves get too big.
A few variety highlights:
Bloomsdale: the standard Savoy leaved spinach on the market. The richly flavoured leaves are excellent in salads or cooked in a main dish or on their own as a side dish. Heat tolerant
Avon: A fast growing hybrid spinach with attractive dark green savoyed leaves. The tasty leaves are perfect as baby greens or as a home garden specialty. Heat tolerant
How to Grow
Olympia: A slow-bolting smooth leaf spinach
Monstreaux De Viroflay: French heirloom that can grow up to 24" in diameter and 8" wide.
No matter how big it gets, the leaves stay tender and delicious.
Note that the New Zealand and Red Malabar are not true spinach - however they are spinach-like and more heat tolerant.
